Manchester City and Chelsea’s title defence was at stake after a first half performance that lacked any spark, while Liverpool and Southampton’s title hopes were at stake when they drew 1-0 at Tottenham Hotspur.
A quick-fire 3-2 win for Arsenal against Manchester City was followed by a first-half draw at Tottenham for the first time since November, when they won 4-0.
A 2-1 defeat at Swansea, which ended Chelsea’s three-game winning streak, saw them drop back to 10th in the table.
Leicester City, on course to reach the top of the table, fell to 10 points adrift of the bottom four.
Leipzig, who had won four of their previous five matches, dropped into the relegation zone with a 2-0 defeat at Schalke 04.
Stoke City, who lost 1-2 to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, could still find themselves in the relegation scrap with a draw at home to Liverpool on Wednesday.
And Southampton, whose record of six straight wins over Premier League opposition has been marred by five defeats, suffered a 4-2 loss to Aston Villa.
There were some positives for West Ham, who were beaten at home by Manchester City in their first match of the new season and are currently third in the Premier Leagues table.
West Ham are sixth, while Leicester are seventh.
West Bromwich Albion lost 2-3 at Manchester City on Wednesday night, while Arsenal beat Stoke City 2-2 at Wembley.
